In EMDR therapy, your therapist will ask you about difficult experiences or memories and what you’d like to feel or think instead. Then, they’ll guide you through a process that involves quick, back-and-forth movements (like eye movements or tapping) to stimulate both sides of your brain. This helps your brain process and make sense of the memories. During this, you’ll share any changes or feelings you notice. The goal is to help reduce the negative impact of those memories, so you can feel more positive and at ease. The process continues until you feel less disturbed by the memory and more hopeful or calm.
